Man vs. Magazine
March 12th, 2010Compliments of ATV Magazine forum members Warrior-Kid and Cchagros. Video footage from their epic ride in New Hamshire. For more discussion on this and other topics please visit the ATV Magazine Forum‘Liiiiiiiike a glove!’
March 11th, 2010As a young ATV rider, I didn’t care if I wore brown jersey gloves (you know those ones that cost a little more than a buck?) when I rode my old Honda four-wheeler. As a young kid in the 1980s, we wore whatever we had on hand to keep warm in the winter or to [...]How to choose a pair of goggles
March 11th, 2010Goggles are a crucial accessory in any off-roader’s gear bag. They can be the difference between a comfortable ride and a dirt-in-the-watering-eyes sunburned-face miserable experience. It is important, however, to properly select a goggle that best suits one’s riding tendencies and locations. There are so many types of riding, as well as many different riding conditions, [...]Thanks for the coverage, I think?
March 9th, 2010The Sunday, March 7 issue of the Minneapolis Star Tribune had a story about the new Polaris EV. The story entitled, “Can Green Be Gold?” ran as an “exclusive” in the Sunday edition. I enjoyed some of the off-road-focused article and thought the author – David Phelps – did a good job of interviewing multiple [...]GNCC Pro ATV Results: 2010 Round 2
March 8th, 2010Well, two rounds are complete and the points race is extremely tight in the 2010 Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Pro ATV class. With the action from the opening weekends of racing in Florida and Georgia, which saw Chris Borich win the opener and follow that with a second at Round 2 in Georgia, I’d [...]Cold Knob 3-07-10
March 7th, 2010Well we finally managed to un thaw the trailer and joined up with a group that was trying to get up the Trout side of Cold Knob for the second (or third) week in a row. After a quick breakfast at Shoneys we headed out to the Cochran farm to unload. I managed to get Jo’s pickup stuck in the snow before we even off loaded the atvs so we had to unhitch the trailer and move it with the atv and then Matt Dixon was kind enough to pull me out of the snow.
I think we ended up with 11 atvs with every major atv manufacture represented. Some of the guys were getting serious about this snow riding as there were several atvs equipped with chains. The weather was almost too warm and it wasn’t long before Jo and I were shedding clothes. My usual snow gear ended up being way to much clothing for todays ride.
I was surprised that the county road still has not been serviced and we were only a couple miles up the mountain when the snow drifts on the road exceeded the atvs ability to make it thru them.
Several of the riders attempted to go further up the road but eventually the snow would give way leaving the atv buried up to the frame in the snow. After they played around in the drifts it was decided to try a different trail to the top of the mountain and so we headed back down the mountain to give the infamous goat trail a try.The guys had made pretty good progress getting up the goat trail last weekend and they probably extended the path another couple hundred yards today before the deep snow won out. We were within site of the first intersection with the road but since it hadn’t been plowed there was no relief there.Despite not having chains Shannon’s Can-Am renegade proved to be the most capable performer in the snow. He spent most of the day in the lead breaking the snowy trail. Near the top of the Goat Trail, Matt and Craig were hooked together leap frogging up the trail with the help of a winch but even that soon lost its appeal and we decided to turn tail and head back down the mountain. At this point we had been on the trail for a couple hours and had managed a whopping 7 miles more or less. Jo and I were languishing in the middle of the pack and I can say these rest of the guys were putting way more effort into trail breaking than we were.We could hear machinery running across the hollow and we thought that maybe they were coming down the mountain with snow clearing equipment but we made a quick run back to the main road only to discover that if they were indeed clearing the road they hadn’t got down to the bottom yet.
In the end the rest of the group tackled a hill that Jo wasn’t comfortable trying to we decided to call it a day. We managed to pry our way into the car wash and 5 bucks later we headed home with the atvs somewhat cleaner than they were when we left this morning.
17 miles isn’t a lot of miles in a days riding but sometimes the experience of being on the trail just sharing an adventure with a good group of riders makes for a great trip and a ride we wont soon forget.
Finally we’re back on the road again. Two months without riding was killing us.
Yes, thats the main county road across Cold Knob to Richwood. We passed several trucks that may have been thinking of going to the Knob but I guarantee none of them made it.

Despite the absence of chains Shannon’s Can-Am was definitely the best in the snow today. This is about all the further they made it over last weeks trip.
Craig surveys the goat trail shorty before deciding to turn back.
Jo says any atv ride is better than sitting at home another sunday.
